Biotech, 3rd year
Student of UIET, Panjab University
I went to GMCH, Sector-32, Chandigarh for a short-term training program for 4 weeks. It is a reputed institute and my experience was also very satisfying there.
I did my training in the genetic department. There they conduct tests to diagnose newborn infants and also the fetus, of any genetic disorders. They explained when and how a particular test was conducted and under what conditions, how the samples of the newly born or the pregnant women would be taken and if the patients were diagnosed with some genetic defect, how would his/her counselling proceed. They also taught about techniques like PCR (to amplify a particular gene sequence to see for defects causing down syndrome in babies not yet born so that the parents are aware of the child's condition), karyotyping, PAPP-A and many other proteins testing with the mother's blood in the first and second trimester etc. Newly born's blood testing was also conducted there for blood sugar levels etc.
Preparing karyotyping plates which usually takes around 3 days and then observing self-made plates with every chromosome separately visible was the best experience.
